Mauritius Officially the Republic of Mauritius
Mauritius is an island nation off the coast of Africa in the southwest Indian Ocean.
Mauritius officially the Republic of Mauritius attained independence in 1968 and the country became a republic within the Commonwealth in 1992.
The island of Mauritius itself is divided into nine districts namely Black River, Flacq, Grand Port, Moka, Pamplemousses, Plaines WilhemsPort Louis, Riviaa re du Rempart, Savanne.
The Island is fifty eight Km in length and forty six Km at its widest point. It has a dramatic landscape of wild jagged peaks, a lush central plateau sloping gently down to the stunning blush pink coral beaches and azure, crystal clear sea. It owes this remarkable landscape to the now inactive volcano, and to the coral reef which mainly surrounds the island.
Mauritius is part of the Mascarene Islands. This archipelago was formed in a series of undersea volcanic eruptions, as the African plate drifted over the Reunion hotspot. Mauritius was formed ten million years ago. They are no longer volcanically active, and the hotspot now rests under Reunion.
Society is highly multi ethnic. Most of the island residents are the descendants of people from the Indian subcontinent. Mauritius also has large immigrant populations from continental Africa, Madagascar, France, Great Britain, and China, among other places. The official languages of Mauritius are English and French.
The chicken curry is a very popular dish. The Chinese fried noodles and dumplings are loved by all and readily bought by the community either in restaurants or on the sidewalks of main streets. A milk based drink with basil seeds has become a typical drink.
The Island has developed from a low income, agriculturally based economy to a middle income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial, and tourist sectors.
The climate is a seductive 24 to 36, with the hottest months from January to April and the coolest from July to September. There is no specific rainy season, the windy months are from January to April with the chance of cyclones, although a direct hit happens about once every sixteen years.
The water sport activities on Mauritius are amongst the best in the world.
Deep sea fishing for marlin, sailfish, barracuda, Wahoo, tuna and shark attract world class competition. Record size blue marlin is best caught between October and March.
Diving and Snorkelling facilities abound. The best place for diving on Mauritius is off Flic and Flac where the main diving attraction is the cave known as the Cathedral. Other good diving sites are found off Grand Bay and Trout au Birches on the Northern Coast. Snorkelling is excellent, especially on the Northern Coast. Exploring the coral reef from a boat, snorkelling just off the beaches or for those who prefer not getting wet, and a glass bottom boat.
Surfing is best between June and August with up to two metre waves common. Tamarin, Baie du Cap and Le Morne are excellent spots with a good social scene.
Water sports such as windsurfing, water skiing, sailing, kayaking are available throughout the island of Mauritius.
