Anthony Machi of Virginia (tribunereview)
Anthony Machi, of Virginia, formerly of Whitehall, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011.
Tony Machi was born Dec. 18, 1915, in Sant’ Elia near Palermo in Sicily and
immigrated to America, arriving at Ellis Island on his fourth birthday in
1919. His family settled in what is now the Strip District of Pittsburgh since
his father owned a produce company, Machi Produce, which existed in the same
spot on Penn Avenue until the 1980s. Tony and his four brothers managed that
company, working through the night, picking up their produce orders from the
docks on Smallman Street and delivering it all day to the small grocery and
corner stores around Pittsburgh. They spent hours on the phone during the day
making calls to those same customers getting their orders for the next day’s
rounds. Tony also served in the Army during World War II in the Aleutian
Islands, Alaska. He returned again to work alongside his father and brothers
and in 1946 met the love of his life, Josephine, at a bowling alley. He was
with his cousins and she was with hers, and trying to convince her to allow
